Honda Canada provided a 2022 Honda Civic Sedan with a full tank of gas.

Many companies have abandoned the compact car in the last few years instead of using engineering to inflate them into so-called “Compact Utility Vehicles.” Few, however, are still breathing life into new generations of these vehicles, and Honda sets a new gold standard for 2022. You have to overperform when you’re leading a segment with sagging numbers. And the 2022 Honda Civic doesn’t land a powerful punch. But, given the people who buy compact sedans are moving up the generational ladder, has the 2022 Honda Civic Sedan done enough to earn its keep?

The Emperor’s New Clothes

There has been a lot of debate about how the prior generation of Honda Civic looked. Its complex curves and aggressive lines drew comparisons with things like The Borg from Star Trek, among other less flattering comparisons. But the 2020 Honda Civic turns down the bold and opts for a tone that blends sophistication and simplicity. True, those are opposing terms, but once you’ve had a seat behind the wheel of a Civic, it makes sense. Our test car, a 2022 Honda Civic Sedan in the Touring trim, comes loaded with everything the Civic offers, including a price tag just north of $30,000 Canadian. That’s a lot of money for a compact sedan, but there’s a lot.

The old expression goes, “it’s what’s inside that counts.” Here is where the 2022 Honda Civic shines. Honda has captured an interior design that feels fresh, modern, and even future-proof without overwhelming the driver with buttons, screens, and spaceship-like interfaces. Instead, we have an example of what contemporary car interior styling should be. Please pay attention, other manufacturers, Honda nailed it inside the 2022 Civic, and you need to take notes. Only one nitpick stands out; the honeycomb grille that spans the dashboard will be a dust magnet in daily use. It’ll never be as clean as it was new.

The Honda Civic, All Grown Up

A new generation of the 2020 Honda Civic brings many new things. This civic is now bigger than ever before. It’s easy to see why people confuse this generation Civic with its larger brother, the Accord. On the upside, the interior feels more spacious and comfortable than prior Honda Civics, even handling a family of five on day trips. But it also means there’s more car to haul around and more weight. The 2022 Honda Civic can’t squeeze into the same spaces a 2010 Civic could. It’s also more weight for the engine to haul around, impacting real-world fuel economy. That’s not to say it’s poor on gas because the 1.5L four-cylinder continues to impress, but there’s less difference between a larger sedan like the Accord than before.

At the Touring level trim, the 2022 Civic Sedan gets equipped with the same tech you’d find in a larger, more executive-style sedan. There’s wireless charging, Android Auto®, Apple CarPlay™, a fully digital instrument cluster, and an updated version of Honda Sensing™ driver aids. They work about as well as we’ve expected these kinds of driver assists to work. Most impressive, however, was the addition of a Bose® 12-speaker system. The listening experience the 2022 Honda Civic provides alone is worth the cost of entry for music lovers of all stripes. It’s a sound experience that feels out of place in a car at this price point, blowing us away with the sound experience in every drive.

New 2022 Honda Civic, Still a Honda Civic

In retrospect, it’s tough to find any specific faults with the 2022 Honda Civic. At its core, this compact sedan ticks every box you expect your modern-day compact sedan to tick. It would be nice to see an electric or hybrid version of this car, or maybe something with AWD for us Winter weather folks. But you get what you see on the tin. The 2022 Honda Civic Sedan Touring is quiet and composed on the highway. It smoothly handles city driving. Even though thin wheels are wrapped around 18-inch rims, the ride is composed and absorbs the harshest bumps. Getting in and out of the low ride height might be an issue for some, but this isn’t unique to the Civic.

We’re still on the fence about CVTs here, but cars like the Civic seem to be the best place for them. Honda has managed the CVT in 2022 Civics well, giving you spirited driving without the annoying buzzing of a sewing machine. Road noise gets well controlled, even at freeway speeds on windy days. There’s enough familiarity about the 2022 Honda Civic that owners making the generational jump will feel at home. Yet, there’s plenty new here to remind you that this is a new Civic. Perhaps what this version of the Civic does best reminds us that compact sedans are still relevant in a world full of inflated utility vehicles.

Remember The Compact Sedan

Fewer people are buying compact sedans in 2022 than ever before. But rising fuel prices and skyrocketing inflation (at the time of publication) make these vehicles more attractive than ever. Does the 2022 Honda Civic Touring give you an experience like you might get in a crossover? No. it gives you a different one. And it excels at the experience it gives you. The 2022 Honda Civic is the best shot we have at making an argument for compact sedans. With an argument this strong, in this economic climate, it’s hard not to see this being another hit for Honda.
